FC Porto won the belated Super Cup by defeating Benfica 2-0 at the Estádio Municipal de Aveiro on Wednesday night.
A penalty by Sérgio Oliveira in the 25th minute and a late goal by Luis Díaz in the 90th decided the match, which is traditionally played before the season begins and was moved because of the pandemic.
“It happened that we scored more goals than Benfica, I think we were always on top of the game, we knew how to counter attack well, attack in organization, seize the opportunity and balance ourselves well against Benfica’s transitions,” said match MVP Sergio Oliveira. “I think we controlled the game. The team is to be congratulated.”
“It was a game against a great rival, who plays well,” said Porto GK Marchesin. “We knew it was going to be hard work, very closed, but we were superior. We had the best occasions.”
FC Porto have now won 22 Super Cups compared to Benfica’s eight.
“The season is very long,” said Grimaldo. “Now we are going to fight for the Liga championship, as well as the Cups and the Europa League.”
“The two halves of the game were balanced, the difference was in the goals, which is what counts,” said Jorge Jesus. “The penalty made the FC Porto team more calm.”
