Gelson Martins Could Face Eight Month Suspension, Issues Public Apology

RMC Sport (France) reports that Monaco’s Gelson Martins of Monaco could be punished with up to an eight-month suspension for pushing a referee in a recent Ligue 1 away match against Nimes.

Martins shoved referee Mikael Lesage before being pulled back by a teammate.

Ligue 1’s disciplinary committee is expected to come down hard on him after a decision is announced on Thursday.

Depending on the length of the suspension, he could miss the rest of Monaco’s current season.

Martins has publically apologized for his actions.

“Anyone who knows me knows that throughout my career I have always had the principle of respecting everyone – from my colleagues, opponents, supporters and referees – off the field and on the field, where I have never been nor am I aggressive towards anyone. I feel I must ask sorry for a thoughtless and hot-headed attitude. I apologize, especially to referee Mikael Lesage, but also to my teammates and our fans.”
