Mistake Sets Up 2-2 WCQ Draw Against Serbia

Cristiano Ronaldo was left upset on Saturday after being denied what appeared to be a clear goal in Portugal’s 2-2 draw with Serbia.

Cristiano thought he had snatched the three points in Belgrade when he pounced on a loose ball inside the penalty area and stabbed an effort towards the goal.

Serbia’s Stefan Mitrovic raced to clear the ball off the goal line, which video shows crossed the line, but it was declared that it had not gone over.

Portugal jumped out to a 2-0 first half advantage on a brace by Jota, but Serbia needed only 15 minutes at the start of the second half to tie it and that ended up being the result after the controversial no goal called..

Fernando Santos

(Referee) “He called me, I went there and he apologized to me. It is the second time in a qualification that I have received an apology after a match.” “He told me that there was no goal line technology and it is important that there should be.”

“Why did we let Serbia tie the match? I have no explanation, I can’t find an explanation. We had studied Serbia, we knew what they could do as they did in the first half, but that they could also change, I warned my players about that.”

“Serbia started well in the 2nd half, they scored a goal, then drew, and after that, we reacted well. We controlled the match well and created chances to score again. Now we have to win in Luxembourg, who just beat Ireland this evening. They have a good team.”

Jota: “We had a very good 1st half, it looked like the hard part was done, but then they changed the system in the 2nd half, scored quickly, and built on from there. But what happened cannot happen at this level.  At 15 minutes into the second half, we have already let Serbia draw. We had to kill the match and do something different. And now we cannot let this happen again in the future.”

Danilo:
“We started very badly in the second half. We conceded a goal soon after the break, we weren’t focused. The goal gave them motivation and they ended up getting a point. It can’t happen when we’re winning 2-0.”
