Portugal will play a meaningless match on Tuesday against Croatia to finish Nations League group play.
After losing to France on Saturday night in Luz, they can’t advance to the Final Four to defend their title.
Meanwhile, Croatia do have something to play for. Croatia need to match or better Sweden’s result to stave off relegation to League B of the Nations League.
Croatia have never defeated Portugal in six all-time matches. Portugal have earned two draws and four wins.
Portugal have no injury or suspension concerns coming into the match. Previously, Renato Sanches and Raphaël Guerreiro were released with injuries.
Jota may start, as may Wolves trio of Nelson Semedo, Ruben Neves and Moutinho.
Cristiano Ronaldo has 102 career international goals. The record is 108.
Santos was asked if his team will play to help Ronaldo in his record chase.
“No, certainly not, nobody will be thinking about Cristiano. They [other players] will not be thinking about not scoring in order to give the chance to someone else. Even Cristiano wouldn’t want that to happen. Cristiano will score when he has to score. They [other players] will not be thinking about that.”
