Week 22 Preview: Benfica in Crisis? Porto Supporters to Honor Marega, Sporting Seek to Build on Thursday’s Win

The Liga NOS Week 22 schedule got underway Friday night as bottom club Aves suffered a 2-0 home loss to Vitoria Guimaraes, who was glad to get the three points after a torrid week following the Marega incident on Sunday night.

A pair of second-half goals by Davidson and Andre Andre clinched the win at Estádio do CD Aves.

Saturday will feature a light schedule with Tondela hosting Rio Ave (18:00) and Belenenses SAD hosting Maritimo (20:30) in the Jamor.

Rio Ave and Carlos Carvalhal continue to impress and are battling for a Europa spot, while also seeking to get closer to the Top 4.

Belenenses SAD (Petit) and Maritimo (Jose Gomes) sit among the bottom teams of the table but have enough points to avoid the relegation line. Their objective at this point remains to finish mid-table.

Santa Clara, the second hottest team in the Liga after SC Braga, will seek to make it five wins in a row as they play Sunday at Moreirense.

Sporting CP is the first of the Big 3 to play this weekend as they host to Boavista at 17:30. Sporting is coming off what some consider their best match of the season on Thursday and Silas is seeking to continue that exact momentum. A tense relationship exists between supporters and club leadership, but a few more wins could change that.

SC Braga returns home from Scotland to host Vitoria Setubal. Not counting the loss to Rangers, Braga is on a hot streak with 10 wins and one draw domestically. Manager Ruben Amorim, despite being heavily criticized upon his hiring for not having the proper manager’s license, has made all the right decisions to get Braga into third place.

FC Porto plays the late match at 20:30 against Portimonense. The supporters are expected to honor and support Marega. It will likely be emotional as Porto seek to earn the three points. If they do, they would at least on Sunday night jump ahead to first place.

Benfica travels up north on Monday to Minho to play at sold-out Gil Vicente. Press call Benfica in a crisis after losing six points in two weeks. However, Bruno Lage reminds his detractors they are still in first place and control their destiny.

Enjoy another great weekend.
