Sérgio Conceição spoke today in his pre-match preview about the upcoming match at Vitória de Guimarães.
FC Porto is coming off a Liga win against eternal rival Benfica last Saturday and beating Académico de Viseu in the Taça de Portugal on Wednesday to qualify for the Cup final on May 24.
They stand four points behind Benfica and that has rekindled their title hopes. They now face a tough away fixture at Vitória de Guimarães.
Ze Luis Not Celebrating Taça de Portugal Goal
“I don’t care if he is sad and is scoring goals. If you walk around sad and in every match, you score a goal that guarantees a victory, then we will all be happy. This is not a big deal. Zé had a very good period at the beginning of the season and then he had a knee problem. Then came another player, who at first was not a protagonist, but in that period he replaced Zé, he did very well. Football is like that and it has cycles, where each player has more or less their highs-and lows.”
“For each position, I have two players who fight for a place daily. If you saw our clubhouse and the joy and camaraderie that exists in it, then that is a question that would not be asked.”
“Pepe is unable to contribute to the team tomorrow and Danilo we will have to see and better understand his physical condition. He is better, no doubt, but then, even with medical authorization, it is up to us see if he is physically ready to contribute to the team.”
The Importance of Every Match
“It is essential to win the game and continue the good result of our last one. I said that the match against Benfica was very important, but that it was not decisive. Decisive are all the games until the end of the season. The championship does not depend on us and what we have to do is to shorten the distance. Only by winning can we eventually close the gap if our rival also loses points. In each match, we have to get the three points. We don’t know what the decisive game of the championship will be. As the end of the season approaches, it is essential to win all the games.”
“They are a very strong opponent, who plays well in their stadium. It is one of the most difficult teams not only domestically but also in Europe. They are a well-crafted team, well-oriented and have excellent players. It is a very difficult task for us. I know the passion of their fans very well because I was fortunate to be the manager of Vitória Guimaraes. It will be an extremely difficult match.”
